In 1876, Tsar Alexander II, who was already a great fan of Louis Roederer cuvées, asked Louis Roederer to “take the exercise even further” and create a cuvée for his personal use that would be unique in terms of its bottle and quality. Louis Roederer offered to create an exceptional white crystal bottle in which he would blend the best selection of vines from 7 of his estate’s grands crus. This cuvée, only made in the “great” years when the maturity of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes allows a subtle, precise balance to be achieved, is the first prestige cuvée in Champagne. Seductive, precise, greedy and endowed with a “streamlined” and almost “living” freshness, this Cristal 2004 is very modern thanks to its harmony and immediate seduction, but remains, first and foremost, a great classic of northern Champagne, combining freshness, energy and an almost chalky minerality. The Cristal signature can be found here: purity, precision and a unique harmony of flavours, combined with the subtle power of old vines grown on the finest terroirs of the Grands Crus Champenois.
