As Margaux’s third Cru Classé, Château Desmirail has been one of the appellation’s most interesting challengers in recent vintages, with Crus that have distinguished themselves by their steady progress. Today, Château Desmirail is one of Bordeaux’s finest Left Bank wines, offering the experience of an accomplished Margaux.
Château Desmirail 2017 is the result of an atypical vintage that did not spare the estate’s vineyards, which were severely affected by frost. The result is a wine that rewards all the care and attention devoted from the vine to the cellar, with expert vinification.
This year’s atypical blend results in a higher proportion of Merlot (55%) than in other vintages, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (35%) and Petit Verdot (10%). The result is a wine of great aromatic expression, displaying pure notes of black berries, blackcurrant and cherry, evolving with aeration to elegant roasted notes reminiscent of coffee. On the palate, the wine has a smooth, delicate texture, with no loss of mid-palate strength thanks to the mellowness and crunchiness of the fruit. The aromatic persistence continues into a powerful, coffee-flavored finish, revealing an elegant woodiness.
