The characteristic of this region is its &#8220;pietra&#8221;. The etymology of the word &#8220;Murgia&#8221; refers to sharp stone or rock and specifically refers to the dry stone walls that line the countryside. The &#8220;Pietrabianca&#8221; also refers to the stones that the peasants strike when plowing the fields and which, once crushed and pressed into the ground, help to enhance the flavors of the wines grown there.
