Carbonnieux white is one of the models of aromatic purity in Graves/Pessac-Léognan.
It seduces with its brilliant pale yellow color.
The nose opens with citrus (lemon, grapefruit), white flowers (acacia, vine blossom), and sometimes an exotic or mineral touch depending on the vintage.
On the palate, the attack is lively and fresh, driven by the Sauvignon Blanc, while the Sémillon brings roundness, volume, and a denser texture, thanks in large part to the aging on lees, partially in barrels/tunnels with a percentage of new wood.
The finish is clean, mouth-watering, and persistent, revealing a beautiful minerality characteristic of well-drained gravel.
This white is best enjoyed young for its freshness and liveliness, but gains complexity with a few years.
Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Bordeaux region.
Founded in the 13th century by Benedictine monks from the Sainte-Croix Abbey of Bordeaux, it is located in Léognan, on the best-drained gravelly outcrop in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Since 1956, the property has belonged to the Perrin family, who have invested in the restoration of the vineyard and modernization of the cellars while respecting tradition.
The estate comprises approximately 92 hectares of vines, almost equally divided between red (≈50-55 ha) and white (≈42-45 ha).
The red grape varieties are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
For the whites, the blend includes mostly Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and a small proportion of Sauvignon Gris.
As for the soils, Carbonnieux benefits from a mosaic of deep gravel, finer gravel, clay, and clay-limestone soils, all on a well-drained subsoil.
These diverse terroirs allow each grape variety to be planted in the most suitable soil, maximizing aromatic finesse and expressing the terroir.
