A rigorous plot selection process gives birth to this rare cuvée, produced only in exceptional vintages. Old vines, low yields, slow vinification, extended barrel aging: everything here strives for excellence. The wine exhibits remarkable aromatic depth: black cherry, cooked plum, orange peel, sweet spices, pencil lead, incense. The palate is full-bodied but controlled, with a subtle mineral energy. The tannins are chiseled, the acidity perfectly balanced. A very long, complex finish with smoky and floral notes. This is a wine for aging and gastronomy, to be decanted for a long time if opened young.
Remelluri is an iconic estate located in the heights of Rioja Alavesa, in Labastida, on the limestone slopes of the Sierra de Toloño. Farmed organically, it benefits from a unique terroir at an altitude of between 600 and 800 meters, offering freshness, tension, and great finesse. Telmo Rodriguez, a renowned winemaker in Spain, has given the estate a new direction focused on the pure expression of the place. The wines are precise, complex, elegant, and made for aging, with a modern approach that respects tradition. Remelluri produces highly distinctive vintages, including the Grandes Réserves, which are among the most refined in Rioja.
Of Basque origin, but considering himself very close to French culture, Telmo Rodriguez studied winemaking at the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology, before completing internships with Cos d’Estournel, Jean Louis Chave, and Trevallon. He also worked on the vinification of the family wines at Remelluri’s estate in Rioja. Then, in 1990, with an investment of just a few thousand euros, he launched his own winery. He purchased grapes to produce his first wines. His first plots of land wouldn’t arrive until 1997, in Rioja. A paradox for someone who was eager to explore new regions.
One of Telmo Rodriguez’s core principles is respect for the Spanish tradition of cultivating vines in goblet form, as this method of training protects them from the intense heat of the Iberian vineyards. He is fiercely opposed to the trend of trellising vineyards and only buys vines that respect his ideals. Telmo also works biodynamically, but, showing great common sense, he admits that he does so solely out of respect for the land and that the label “organic viticulture” is of no importance to him. The important thing is that the result is a balanced and flavorful wine.
