As early as the Middle Ages, the monks of Cîteaux set about creating the Clos de Vougeot, surrounded by a dry-stone wall built to demarcate and protect this unique terroir. It took more than two centuries to shape this exceptional clos as we know it today, with the demarcation completed in the 14th century and the surrounding wall erected in the 15th century. Today, this legendary Burgundy vineyard is divided between 82 owners, covering a total of 50 hectares of prestigious vineyard land.
Domaine Faiveley, one of Burgundy’s most renowned vineyards, owns three parcels within Clos de Vougeot, finely representing the complexity and richness of this appellation. Two of the parcels are located at the bottom of the vineyard, in deeper, clayey soils that give the wine roundness and power. The third parcel is located in the center, near the château, on more chalky soil, giving the wine an elegant structure and more floral aromas.
The 2020 vintage of Faiveley’s Clos de Vougeot fully expresses the characteristics of these different terroirs. Its bouquet is rich in black fruit and undergrowth aromas, with spicy and mineral notes. On the palate, it is distinguished by great depth and tannic structure, offering a subtle balance between power and elegance. This wine promises excellent ageing potential and will evolve magnificently in the cellar.
