The vineyard
Château les Carmes Haut Brion is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a 30.75-hectare vineyard, 7.60 hectares of which are dedicated to the Grand Vin. The vines are almost 40 years old and planted on Mindel gravel on a clay-limestone bedrock.
The vintage
The start of 2022 was marked by low rainfall, encouraging the vines to develop their root systems deep down. Bud-break in mid-March preceded a long period of hot weather that stretched from May to the rainy spells of mid-August. Despite these extreme conditions, the grapes are of exceptional quality, revealing after harvest a rare alliance of richness, power and voluptuousness.
Vinification and ageing
Hand-picked, the grapes undergo rigorous sorting in the vineyard and cellar. Whole bunch vinification (70%). Aged in new barrels (70%), new 18-hl foudres (20%) and amphoras (10%).
Blend
Cabernet franc (40%)
Cabernet sauvignon (34%)
Merlot (26%).
