The 2020 Smith-Haut-Lafitte Rouge immediately seduces with its dense, very dark, almost black color with bluish highlights.

The nose develops black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), then becomes richer with the swirling of spicy notes (licorice, star anise), blond tobacco, graphite, with very earthy empyreumatic and mineral touches.
On the palate, the attack is ample, powerful, yet already very harmonious: firm, well-coated tannins, a velvety texture in the background, marked internal freshness, rich and concentrated body.

The finish is long, persistent, and mouthwatering, with black fruits, spices, and a beautiful minerality that leaves its mark after each sip.

A great wine with excellent aging potential (20-30 years), already impressive but which will benefit from being opened after a few years.

Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte is a renowned estate located in Martillac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Since 1990, it has belonged to the couple Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who have passionately invested in the vineyard, respect for the environment, and the excellence of their wine.

The estate covers approximately 87 hectares in a single block, covered with deep gravel—a terroir of gravel on a limestone subsoil, particularly well-draining, allowing the vines to draw water from deep within, promoting slow but complete ripening.

Since the 2019 vintage, the estate has been certified organic, with practices that enhance biodiversity: hedges, beehives, respect for the soil, addition of organic compost, and gentle mechanical tillage.

The vines are on average very old (≈38-48 years old depending on the batch), which brings depth, complexity, and consistency to the grapes.

This estate is an icon of the appellation.
