L’Ermita 2008 is the flagship wine of Álvaro Palacios’ estate, located in Priorat, Catalonia. Made primarily from old Grenache vines, complemented by Cariñena and a touch of white grape varieties, it comes from steep slopes with schist soils called “llicorella.” The 2008 vintage matured slowly and evenly, producing fruit of great purity. Aged for approximately eighteen months in French oak barrels, this rare wine expresses the quintessence of the terroir. L’Ermita is distinguished by its controlled power, aromatic intensity, and exceptional aging potential.
The color is dark, deep ruby with garnet highlights. The nose reveals remarkable intensity with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, truffle, graphite, and hot stone. On the palate, the body is dense, velvety, and concentrated, supported by powerful yet silky tannins. The balance between richness and freshness is masterful. The finish, long and mineral, leaves an impression of purity and energy.
The Álvaro Palacios Estate, located in the heart of Priorat in Catalonia, is one of Spain’s most iconic wineries. Founded in the 1990s by Álvaro Palacios, a visionary from a prominent Rioja winemaking family, the estate has contributed significantly to the Priorat’s renaissance and international prestige. Nestled on steep llicorella (slate) terraces, the vines sink their roots into poor, mineral soil that produces wines of exceptional intensity and depth. The vineyard is primarily planted with Garnacha and Cariñena, indigenous grape varieties that express the full strength and finesse of the terroir. The viticulture is respectful of nature, with meticulous attention paid to each vine. Among the flagship vintages, the legendary L’Ermita is considered one of Spain’s greatest wines, sought after worldwide for its rarity and elegance. Other wines, such as Finca Dofí or Les Terrasses, also reflect the winemaker’s mastery and passion. The Álvaro Palacios estate embodies the perfect balance between tradition, modernity, and emotion, making Priorat a land of exceptional grands crus.
