Château Ausone, located on the clay-limestone hillsides of Saint-Émilion, has been producing exceptional wines since Roman times. The 2016 vintage is a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, from vines averaging 51 years old. After vinification in oak vats, the wine was aged for 20 months in barrels, 80% of which were new.
The color is a deep ruby red. The nose offers aromatic complexity with notes of violet, black cherry, chocolate, ripe black fruit, spices, and cedar. On the palate, the attack is full-bodied, with fine, velvety tannins, supported by a lovely freshness. The finish is long, marked by nuances of black fruits, chocolate and a mineral touch.
Château Ausone is one of the most prestigious wine estates in Saint-Émilion, Gironde. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 1955, it is renowned for its exceptional terroir and its extremely fine wines.
Located at the southern entrance to the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, the vineyard extends over 7 hectares of limestone hillsides, benefiting from an ideal east/southeast exposure. The soils, composed of asteriated limestone and clay, give the wines a distinctive minerality and great freshness.
The main grape varieties are Cabernet Franc (55%) and Merlot (43%), with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinification is traditional, with fermentation in temperature-controlled wooden vats and aging for 20 months in oak barrels, 85% of which are new. This method produces powerful, aromatic wines with great length.
Château Ausone is run by the Vauthier family, who perpetuate a tradition of quality and excellence. The estate’s wines are renowned for their exceptional aging potential, with some vintages able to improve for several decades.
In 2022, the château chose not to participate in the new Saint-Émilion classification, in protest against the criteria used. Nevertheless, it remains an essential reference for lovers of fine wines.
In short, Château Ausone embodies the viticultural excellence of Saint-Émilion, offering wines of rare complexity and timeless elegance.
