Description Estate Additional information

A pure Merlot aged for 18 months in new barrels and presented in a numbered bottle.
The wine lives up to its promise, built around intense black fruit, somewhere between blackcurrant and blackberry, with hints of violet and raspberry.
The palate is powerful and dense, underlined by well-integrated tannins and plenty of freshness.
A wine for aging, without excess tannins, with a very long finish. Hachette Guide 2023.

Both powerful and rounded, this wine offers a sensual smoothness and great suppleness on the palate. The combination of this iconic vintage and Nina Mitjavile makes this Château Martet “Réserve de Famille” a high-end wine, perfect for long aging.

Our recommendation: enjoy it with duck, goose, red meats, and mushroom dishes; it will bring you nothing but pleasure!

Château Martet, a venerable Carthusian monastery built in the 13th century and a hospitable house of the Knights Templar for pilgrims on the Way of St. James, was acquired in 1991 by the current owners, who immediately worked to restore the vineyard and property to their former glory.

Our high-quality terroir has been dedicated to viticulture since the Roman era, and became widespread in the 11th century.

Located 25 km from Saint-Emilion, the vineyard, spanning nearly 25 hectares in a single plot, is located on the plateau and hillsides overlooking the Dordogne River at an altitude of 100 meters, near the small town (a former 13th-century fortified town) of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande.

The soil on 18 hectares is clay-limestone (equivalent to the dominant soil in the Saint-Emilion area), and on 7 hectares, corresponding to the highest part, it is clay-gravel.

After two years of observation, it was decided to undertake a major vineyard restructuring program, which began in 1993 and was completed in 2006.

The goal was, firstly, to uproot grape varieties poorly suited to the soil, namely Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which very rarely reach optimal ripeness and cause undesirable green pepper flavors. And secondly, the uprooting of the wide vines with too low a planting density, which often results in diluted wines…

With the 2004 vintage, our last hectare of Cabernet will have produced for the final time, and all the wide vines will have been uprooted (with the exception of one and a half hectares intended for the vinification of Martet Clairet) to be replaced with low-growing vines at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. It goes without saying that we saved the plots of low-growing old Merlot vines dating from the 1960s to 1965, in order to maintain a perfect balance between young and old vines.
