The 2020 vintage of Château Sociando-Mallet, the flagship wine of the Haut-Médoc appellation, perfectly reflects the classic style of the estate: structured, elegant, and with excellent aging potential.
This wine is primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, depending on the parcels. The blend delivers both power and harmony.
On the nose, it reveals a complex profile, combining ripe dark fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), graphite notes, and subtle hints of spice.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and precise, with firm yet elegant tannins supporting a rich, balanced texture. The finish is long, mineral, and subtly oaky, reflecting careful barrel aging.
The 2020 vintage can be enjoyed after a few years in the cellar, but it has an aging potential of 10 to 15 years, or even longer under optimal conditions.
A benchmark Haut-Médoc, ideal with red meats, game, and saucy dishes, combining power, elegance, and structure for lovers of wines built for aging.
Located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Pauillac, Château Sociando-Mallet is an iconic estate in the Haut-Médoc, known for the consistent quality of its wines without ever seeking official classification.
The estate’s history dates back to the 17th century, with lands owned by a Basque family named “Sociando.” In the 19th century, marriage with the Mallet family gave rise to the current name.
The major turning point came in 1969, when Jean Gautreau purchased a property in poor condition, with only a few hectares of vines. Captivated by the potential of the terroir and the view over the Gironde estuary, he undertook extensive work: replanting, vineyard expansion, and modernization of the facilities.
Today, the estate covers approximately 80 hectares, mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, on gravel soils over a clay-limestone subsoil — a typical Médoc terroir that produces structured wines capable of aging.
Since Jean Gautreau’s passing in 2019, his daughter Sylvie Gautreau has continued the work, with a respectful approach to both vineyard and environment.
Château Sociando-Mallet is regarded as a benchmark of the Haut-Médoc “hors classement,” recognized for the consistency and rigor of its work, with a style true to the Médoc: structured, precise, and built for aging.
