Château de Sancerre, in the heart of the vineyards, is the only château in the region. It was built in the 10th century. The Tour des Fiefs, the only remnant of the feudal castle, remains from this period. The château was rebuilt in 1874 in the Louis XII style.
In 1919, Louis-Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle, inventor of the Grand Marnier liqueur, bought Château de Sancerre and part of the vineyards, out of love for his hometown. He converted the château’s former outbuildings into cellars and developed his vineyard, while actively contributing to the wine’s renown. Today, the vineyard covers 56 hectares and is the only Sancerre wine to be marketed under the exclusive name of “Château de Sancerre”.
