In 1876, Tsar Alexander II, who was already a great fan of Louis Roederer cuvées, asked Louis Roederer to “take the exercise even further” and create a cuvée for his personal use that would be unique in terms of its bottle and quality. Louis Roederer offered to create an exceptional white crystal bottle in which he would blend the best selection of vines from 7 of his estate’s grands crus. This cuvée, only made in the “great” years when the maturity of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes allows a subtle, precise balance to be achieved, is the first prestige cuvée in Champagne. Seductive, precise, greedy and endowed with a “streamlined” and almost “living” freshness. Its salmon-pink colour with very bright reflections is incredibly youthful. Active, fine and regular effervescence. An intense, rich and bewitching bouquet of red fruit and citrus zest, combined with more complex notes reminiscent of cedar and spring sap. The aromas evolve gently in the glass, passing through a range of dried fruits, from fresh almonds to frangipane, to finish on notes of tarte Tatin, baked apple and caramel. Smooth and silky on the palate, with harmonious flavours and concentrated fruit. The attack is fruity and crisp. Finesse and fruitiness intermingle
to give a fleshy, melt-in-the-mouth ensemble that quickly gives way to candied citrus and dried fruit.
