La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet 2019 – English
The second wine of Château Sociando-Mallet showcases an approachable expression of the Médoc style while maintaining a solid structure.
The 2019 vintage is dominated by Merlot (around 80%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, providing both roundness and firmness.
On the nose, it offers a generous profile, marked by ripe dark fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), with subtle spicy and lightly oaky notes.
On the palate, the wine is smooth and generous, with good body and fine tannins that structure the wine without harshness. The finish, with a hint of vanilla, extends the pleasure with lovely persistence.
This 2019 impresses with its balance between fruitiness and structure: it can be enjoyed now for its fruit, but also has a potential for aging of about 5 to 10 years.
An accessible Haut-Médoc, ideal to accompany grilled meats or flavorful dishes, while remaining elegant and easy to appreciate.
Château Sociando-Mallet – English
Located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Pauillac, this Haut-Médoc estate is one of those highly regarded properties that never sought official classification.
The history of the estate dates back to the 17th century, with lands belonging to a Basque family named “Sociando,” whose name evolved over time. In the 19th century, marriage with the Mallet family gave rise to the current name.
The real turning point came in 1969, when Jean Gautreau purchased a property in poor condition, with only a few hectares of vines. Captivated by the potential of the terroir and the view over the Gironde, he undertook major improvements: replanting, expanding the vineyard, and modernizing the facilities.
Today, the estate covers around 80 hectares of vineyards, mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, on gravelly soils over a clay-limestone subsoil — a typical Médoc terroir that produces structured wines capable of aging.
Since Jean Gautreau’s passing in 2019, his daughter Sylvie Gautreau has continued the work, with a respectful approach to both vineyard and environment.
Today, Sociando-Mallet is often considered a benchmark of the Haut-Médoc “hors classement,” recognized for the consistency and rigor of its work, with a style true to the Médoc: structured, precise, and built for aging.
