This superb 2nd Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac has been owned by the Rouzaud family (Champagne Louis Roederer) since 2007, with Nicolas Glumineau at the helm. Together, they extend the immense work of the previous owners, in particular May-Eliane de Lencquesaing who managed the estate brilliantly. The vinifications are monitored by the oenologist Eric Boissenot.
Located to the south of the appellation, on deep gravel soil, the 85 hectares of the Pichon Longueville Comtesse vineyard overlook the Gironde estuary, taking advantage of its favorable climatic influence. 11 hectares of vines are found in the neighboring Saint-Julien appellation, giving the wine a refinement rare in Pauillac. The significant presence of Merlot in the blend (35% of the grape variety) gives it a southern side – charm, richness and smoothness – which allows it to open up earlier than most of the great wines of the Médoc. However, the share of Cabernet Sauvignon has increased in recent vintages, resulting in even better aging prospects.
