Jacques Thienpont, owner of the illustrious Le Pin in Pomerol, bought eight hectares in 2010 on the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion near the 1st Classified Growths: L’If, now part of the circle of “greats” on the shore right. Beyond the lexical echo to its prestigious Pomerol cousin, “If” in English refers to the many choices of the winemaker throughout his work. Those that were made here were clearly well inspired! It is Cyrille Thienpont, nephew of Jacques, who manages the estate.
The vineyard has 70% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, spread over 14 plots which give rise to tailor-made vinification. The malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels and the aging is made up of 50% new wood.
Blend: 75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc
Ageing: 12 to 16 months in barrels, 50% new
Tasting notes: The wines are dark and brilliant with fruity concentration and excellent aromatic freshness. Complex with an appealing sweetness and a charming, floral palate, there’s a streak of freshness from the young, lively Cabernet Francs that make up a quarter of the blend, while the Merlots add depth and texture. Although the wine has a classic allure, it has a silky, mouth-watering structure that is characteristic of modern IF accessibility.
