St Henri is a traditional, alternative expression of Syrah, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high-quality Australian red wines in not using new oak. First brought to market by Penfolds in the early 1950s. St Henri is rich and full-bodied when young, but acquires soft, earthy, mocha-like characteristics with age. It is aged in an assortment of large, old vats that allow the wine to develop, giving it minimal, if any, oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet may creep into the blend, the focal point of St Henri remains Syrah.
