In 1876, Tsar Alexander II, already a great fan of Louis Roederer’s cuvées, asked Louis Roederer to “push the exercise even further” to develop, for his personal use, a cuvée unique in terms of its bottle and its quality. Louis Roederer then offers to make an exceptional white crystal bottle in which he elaborates the best selection of vines from 7 grands crus of his estate. This cuvée, only produced in the “great” years where the maturity of the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir make it possible to achieve a subtle, precise balance, is the first prestige cuvée of Champagne. Seductive, precise, greedy and endowed with a “streamlined” and almost “alive” freshness. Its salmon pink color with very bright reflections and an incredible youthfulness. Active, fine and regular effervescence. Intense, rich and bewitching bouquet of red fruits and citrus zest associated with more complex notes reminiscent of cedar and spring sap. The aromas evolve slowly in the glass through a variation of dried fruits, from fresh almond to frangipane, to finish with notes of tarte tatin, baked apple and caramel. Soft and silky on the palate, the harmony of flavors and the concentration of fruit. The attack is fruity and crunchy. Finesse and fruitiness intermingle
to give a fleshy and melting whole which quickly gives way to candied citrus fruits, dried fruits.
