Tignanello 2016 and 2020 – Marchesi Antinori (Enoteca Antinori)
The Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2016 and 2020 is one of the most iconic wines of modern Italian winemaking, produced at the Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region.
Considered a pioneer of “Super Tuscans,” Tignanello is produced under the IGT Toscana designation, which allows greater freedom in blending and winemaking style. The vineyard is planted on limestone marl and pebble-rich soils, providing a balance of structure, freshness, and ripeness.
The 2016 vintage was particularly successful in Tuscany, marked by ideal climatic conditions that allowed for slow and complete grape ripening. The blend is primarily Sangiovese, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Ageing in French oak barrels adds significant complexity, with seamlessly integrated notes of oak, sweet spices, and tobacco that never overpower the fruit.
On the nose, aromas of black cherry, plum, violet, fine leather, and spices emerge. On the palate, the wine is structured and elegant, with bright acidity, fine tannins, and remarkable depth.
This is a great Tuscan wine that combines tradition and modernity, offering strong ageing potential and evolving towards complex notes of undergrowth, truffle, and noble spices.
Tenuta Tignanello – Marchesi Antinori
The Marchesi Antinori family is one of the oldest wine dynasties in Italy, active since 1385. In Tuscany, it manages the prestigious Tenuta Tignanello estate, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, between Florence and Siena.
The Tignanello vineyard is planted on south-west facing hillsides at an ideal altitude for optimal grape ripening. The soils consist of limestone marl and galestro (crumbly schist), providing excellent drainage and promoting strong aromatic concentration in the grapes.
This estate holds historical significance as it played a major role in the birth of the “Super Tuscans,” introducing innovative blending practices and the use of French oak barriques outside the traditional Chianti Classico regulations.
The main grape varieties are Sangiovese, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, resulting in wines that are structured, elegant, and highly complex.
Winemaking is precise and modern, with strict parcel selection and careful ageing in French oak barrels.
Today, Tenuta Tignanello is regarded as one of Tuscany’s most iconic estates and a global benchmark for expressive, long-ageing red wines.
