Located in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the most renowned names in the region. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in 1855, it is recognized for producing powerful, structured wines with remarkable aromatic depth.
The estate originates from the historic and once vast Léoville estate, now divided among several prestigious properties. Over time, Léoville Poyferré has established itself as one of the most brilliant and expressive representatives of Saint-Julien, thanks to meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar.
The vineyard covers approximately 80 hectares, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. The deep gravel soils typical of Saint-Julien provide structure, finesse, and excellent ageing potential.
The 2020 vintage benefited from particularly favourable weather conditions, ensuring optimal ripeness and excellent concentration. It expresses a remarkable balance between power and elegance.
The wine reveals a complex nose of ripe black fruits, blackcurrant, blackberry, and cherry, along with notes of violet, sweet spices, cedar, and subtle toasted nuances.
On the palate, Léoville Poyferré 2020 stands out for its richness, broad structure, and powerful yet perfectly integrated tannins. The overall profile is dense, harmonious, and supported by a fine sense of freshness.
Already impressive in its youth, this great Saint-Julien wine has outstanding ageing potential and perfectly embodies the generous and profound style of the estate.
Located in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the greatest estates of Bordeaux. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in 1855, it belongs to the very select circle of the Médoc’s most prestigious crus.
The estate originates from the division of the historic and once vast Léoville estate, formerly one of the largest vineyards in Bordeaux and now shared among several renowned châteaux. Over time, Léoville Poyferré has established itself as one of the most expressive and ambitious representatives of Saint-Julien.
The vineyard covers approximately 80 hectares, planted on deep Garonne gravel hilltops, typical of the appellation. It is mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, allowing for great blending complexity.
Under the leadership of the Cuvelier family, the estate has undergone significant modernisation, both in vineyard management and winery facilities. The work is precise, parcel-based, and focused on expressing the terroir as faithfully as possible.
The wines of Château Léoville Poyferré are distinguished by their power, aromatic richness, and dense structure, while retaining the elegance characteristic of great Saint-Julien wines. They also offer excellent ageing potential.
