CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE ROUGE 2025 – Pessac-Léognan: 98-100 pts
Château Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge ranks among the benchmark wines of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Sourced from an exceptional terroir of Günzian gravel soils, the estate is renowned for producing wines that combine power, precision, and elegance, in a style that faithfully reflects the finest wines of Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
The 2025 vintage impresses with its remarkable balance and outstanding aromatic purity. The nose reveals intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, fine spices, and a delicate smoky touch characteristic of the Pessac-Léognan terroir.
On the palate, the attack is broad and refined. The wine is dense, deep, and perfectly structured, supported by silky tannins of exceptional precision. The balance between concentration, freshness, and elegance gives the wine remarkable harmony and superb definition.
The finish is long, complex, and persistent, marked by nuances of dark fruits, liquorice, and finely integrated oak notes.
Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 2025 brilliantly embodies the estate’s signature style: a deep, refined, and distinguished wine with outstanding ageing potential, destined to evolve beautifully over the coming decades.
The Estate – Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the most prestigious estates in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and an essential reference among the great wines of Bordeaux. Its history dates back to the 14th century, but it was under the leadership of the Cathiard family, owners since 1990, that the estate experienced a remarkable rise, driven by a constant pursuit of excellence and innovation.
The vineyard extends over approximately 80 hectares of red vines planted on an exceptional terroir of Günzian gravel soils, renowned for their excellent drainage and their ability to retain and radiate heat to the vines. This unique terroir contributes to the depth, finesse, and complexity of the wines.
The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve the expression of its terroir. The estate is also widely recognized for its commitment to sustainable viticulture and environmentally responsible practices.
Ageing is carried out with great precision in barrels produced by the château’s own cooperage, allowing rigorous quality control at every stage. This approach contributes to the estate’s signature style, characterized by elegance, balance, and remarkable ageing potential.
Today, Château Smith Haut Lafitte is regarded as one of the flagship estates of Pessac-Léognan, producing wines that combine power, refinement, and a strong sense of terroir, making them among the most sought-after wines of Bordeaux.
