It’s true that Saint-Julien doesn’t have a 1er Cru Classé, but it’s just the same, with Château Ducru Beaucaillou the perfect ambassador for the appellation. Taken over in 1941 by the Borie family, still owners today, the estate is run by Bruno Borie, with the advice of oenologist Eric Boissenot. This 2nd Cru Classé takes its name from the “large, beautiful pebbles” that litter the estate’s soil. A superb terroir of quaternary Garonne gravel, capable of draining rainwater and retaining the sun’s heat, releasing it to the vines at night. This is the ideal soil for producing the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines (70% of the vineyard). The 75-hectare vineyard, located on the banks of the Gironde estuary, benefits from the river’s cooling effect.
Ducru Beaucaillou wines are prized by wine-lovers the world over for their classic elegance. Discreet and elegant, both silky and sappy, they offer bright fruit, infinitely fine tannins and great freshness. Their ageing potential is immense.
