Fascinated by the diversity of aromatic expression of the Pinot noir grape in Champagne, Louis Roederer decided to base his Vintage Brut on the structure and power of Pinot noirs from the Montagne de Reims, where the vines, with their north-northeast exposure, are slower to ripen and produce wines that are sometimes rough and closed at the start of ageing, but whose personality becomes remarkably refined and intensified with ageing in wood and over time. In 1850, he decided to buy more than 15 hectares in the Verzenay Grand Cru to better control the production of the grapes for this cuvée.
The year 2016 was characterized by a particularly pronounced climatic swing: after a cool, wet, rather late spring, the summer was dry and hot, marked by a scorching spell at the end of August and a dry, sunny harvest period that ensured the grapes ripened beautifully. These dry, bright conditions benefited the canicular Pinots Noirs, whose ripeness revealed an intense fruity character and silky texture. The Chardonnays are not to be outdone, with a more classic, chiselled and saline allure.
