The Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné Saint-Joseph “Croix des Vignes” 2017 is a red wine from the Saint-Joseph appellation, located in the northern Rhône Valley.

The Saint-Joseph vineyards stretch across steep slopes overlooking the right bank of the Rhône River, with soils made up of granite and schist. This geology gives the wines a straight structure, fine tension, and very precise aromatic expression.

The “Croix des Vignes” cuvée is made from Syrah, the only permitted grape variety in the appellation. The 2017 vintage, marked by favourable ripening conditions, produced balanced, expressive wines that are approachable while maintaining good structure.

Ageing in oak barrels adds an extra layer of complexity without overpowering the fruit.

On the nose, aromas of black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), black pepper, violet, and light smoky notes can be found. On the palate, the attack is smooth, with an elegant structure, fine tannins, and a fresh, spicy finish.

This is a harmonious Saint-Joseph, typical of the northern Rhône Valley, combining fruit, finesse, and the expression of its granitic terroir.

The Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné is a historic wine house from the northern Rhône Valley, founded in 1834. It has established itself as one of the region’s emblematic producers, particularly in the appellations Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, and Crozes-Hermitage.

The estate is built on an exceptional heritage of hillside vineyards, mainly planted on granite and alluvial soils depending on the appellation. This diversity of terroirs allows the production of red and white wines with strong identity, marked by finesse, structure, and expressive fruit character.

Syrah plays a central role in the estate’s red wines, bringing aromas of black fruit, spice, and violet, with an elegant structure and good ageing potential. Winemaking is carried out with care, focusing on terroir expression and aromatic precision.

Oak ageing is carefully managed to preserve the balance between power and finesse, without masking the fruit character.

Today, Jaboulet is recognized as a historic benchmark of the northern Rhône Valley, producing wines that are approachable in their youth while also capable of graceful ageing in bottle.
