Vega Sicilia – Alión 2021/2022 – Spain

The Vega Sicilia Alión is one of Spain’s great contemporary red wines, originating from the prestigious Ribera del Duero region. Produced by the renowned estate Vega Sicilia, it embodies a modern and elegant interpretation of the Tempranillo grape, while maintaining the precision and refinement for which the domaine is known.

The vineyard is spread across several carefully selected parcels within Ribera del Duero, benefiting from a continental climate marked by significant temperature variations. These conditions allow for slow, complete grape ripening, promoting concentration, freshness and balance.

The 2021 and 2022 vintages each express remarkable intensity and precision. The wine reveals aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberry, black cherry and cassis, along with floral notes, sweet spices, cocoa and subtle, well-integrated oak.

On the palate, Alión shows a straight, elegant structure, with fine yet present tannins and impressive depth. The overall profile remains harmonious, with a refreshing backbone that balances the richness of the fruit and the wine’s concentration.

Vega Sicilia Alión has excellent ageing potential and can develop gracefully over 10 to 15 years. It pairs perfectly with grilled meats, lamb, game, or refined Mediterranean dishes.

Bodegas Alión – Vega Sicilia – Ribera del Duero

Bodegas Alión, part of the legendary Vega Sicilia estate, is one of the most important modern projects in Spanish winemaking. Created in the early 1990s, it was conceived as a more contemporary interpretation of the Ribera del Duero, while preserving the rigor, precision and signature style of the Álvarez family, owners of Vega Sicilia.

The estate is located in Castilla y León, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, on diverse soils combining gravel, clay and limestone. The vineyard is planted exclusively with Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), the region’s emblematic grape variety, sourced from carefully selected old vines across different parcels around Peñafiel and the surroundings of Vega Sicilia.

The aim of Alión is to offer a more direct and modern expression of the terroir, with precise winemaking and carefully controlled ageing in French oak barrels. The style is defined by great concentration, but also by a clear pursuit of balance and elegance, in line with the world’s great wines.

Recent vintages such as 2021 and 2022 perfectly illustrate this philosophy: deep, structured wines, always supported by a refreshing backbone. Alión reveals aromas of ripe black fruits, spices, cocoa and subtle oak notes, with a full-bodied, silky palate and excellent persistence.

Alión has established itself as a benchmark of modern Ribera del Duero, capable of competing with the world’s finest wines while maintaining a strong and clearly defined Spanish identity.
